iPhone SE 4 will have a worse 5G modem than iPhone 16: but there is a nuance
It has become known that Apple has postponed the presentation of the new iPhone SE 4 to next week. The gadget is expected to be released at the end of February, and sales will start at the end of the month or in early March.
Insiders have revealed further details. It turns out that the iPhone SE 4 will have a worse 5G modem than the iPhone 16. Apple aims to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm in device manufacturing.
According to South Korean source Donga, Apple is preparing to present its own communication chip, which it has been working on since 2018. This modem is expected to become an integral part of the new iPhone SE 4.
Initially, Apple planned to introduce its own modem in the iPhone 14 and later in the iPhone 15. However, the company did not achieve the required level of quality, which forced it to continue its cooperation with Qualcomm until 2026.
At the same time, Apple is gradually improving its own modems, although they are not yet equivalent to the Qualcomm X71 model.
The main disadvantage of the new chip is the lack of support for millimeter waves (mmWave), which provide the fastest 5G connection. Because of this, in regions where mmWave is used, devices with Apple's modem will have lower performance compared to competitors.
Despite the technical compromises, Apple expects significant savings by switching to its own modems. The company already saves about $2.5 billion annually on the production of its own processors, and a similar approach to modems will reduce costs.
In addition, the proprietary chip will contribute to more efficient battery use and improve the overall performance of the iPhone SE 4, as it will be optimized to work with the Apple ecosystem.
