There are several ways to get pregnant that are difficult to explain, even for scientists. Let's look at four of the strangest ones.

Traditionally, in order to get pregnant, an egg must be fertilized by a sperm during a certain period of the menstrual cycle. But that doesn't mean that every pregnancy happens this way, ScienceAlert writes.

Intercourse provides optimal conditions for reproduction. But there are also examples of women who got pregnant in a very strange way.

Through anal sex

Although pregnancy as a result of anal sex is incredibly rare, it does happen. But they have only occurred in people with a reproductive anomaly called cloaca malformation. It occurs in one in 50 thousand girls.

A cloaca is a "common opening" for urination, defecation, and reproduction. It is commonly seen in reptiles, birds, and even platypuses.

In humans, a special tissue divides the cloaca into two or three openings (depending on gender). But in rare cases, this tissue does not completely separate the rectum from the vaginal cavity. In such cases, it can allow sperm to swim through any opening in the wall of the separating tissue to the egg to fertilize it.

Through oral sex

It is not possible to get pregnant through oral sex. However, there was a case when a young woman who was born without a vagina came to doctors complaining of recurrent abdominal pain.

Doctors' tests revealed a fetus in her uterus. The pain was the cause of the onset of labor. The child was born by cesarean section.

Since the girl was born without a vagina, this ruled out sexual intercourse as a way of conception. It turned out that 9 months before giving birth, she was hospitalized with stab wounds in her abdomen. The wounds were the result of a knife fight between her, her jealous ex and her new partner.

It turned out that before the fight started, she had oral sex with her new boyfriend.

During the surgery to repair her stomach, the sperm that was in her abdominal cavity at the time flowed to the egg and fertilized it.

"Surge pregnancy"

Another way to get pregnant without having intercourse is through a "pregnancy surge". This strange name means that during sexual intercourse, sperm got to the external genitals, and from there - to the vagina and swam to the ovaries.

Although this way to get pregnant is unlikely, as sperm do not survive more than half an hour outside the body.

Healthy sperm swim at a speed of up to 5 mm per minute, they only survive for up to five days in the female genitals.

Of the hundreds of millions of sperm that enter the vagina during intercourse, where conditions are ideal, only 200-300 reach the egg. This explains why infertile pregnancies are so rare.

Scientists emphasize that a "splash" pregnancy cannot occur due to sperm in water, say in a hot bath or swimming pool. This is because the water disperses the sperm and dilutes the seminal fluid, which normally protects the sperm from the harsh internal genitalia of a woman and the outside world. Chemicals such as chlorine in water also kill sperm quickly.

Pregnancy with twins

The body has a mechanism that prevents another pregnancy when a woman is already pregnant. This natural block works even for women who were born with two uteruses. Hormones prevent ovulation and produce a thick mucous plug that covers the cervix to prevent sperm from moving into the uterus to the ovary.

But one glitch, called superfetation, breaks these rules. In this process, a second pregnancy appears when the first one is already developing.

This phenomenon is so rare that scientists do not fully understand how it happens. Most of the reported cases were in women who used IVF (in vitro fertilization).

Two pregnancies occur very close to each other, usually within two to four weeks. This means that the babies can be born at the same time, like twins.

Despite the difference in gestational age, most of these pregnancies proceed normally without complications.
