In the footsteps of the northern lights: where to go to see the miracle of nature
Strolling through Vienna, enjoying a croissant in Paris, and exploring the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican is the perfect travel plan. But sometimes you want something special and unusual. For example, to admire one of the most beautiful celestial spectacles on the planet. So if you've been wanting to watch this fabulous phenomenon for a long time, it's time to make your dreams come true. Read below to find out when and where to go.
Finland
In Lapland, especially in the regions of Rovaniemi, Kilpisjärvi, and Sodankylä, the northern lights can be seen almost every night. Most often, the lights appear in spring and fall, not in winter.
Interesting fact: the locals call the northern lights "Fox Fire."
We also recommend a trip to Levi. The resort is located at a considerable distance from the Arctic Circle, about 170 kilometers away. It is one of the best places to observe the phenomenon. It is known that the higher the latitude, the more likely you are to see a natural spectacle. However, it is difficult to predict exactly when it will appear.
We recommend choosing open plains or lakes covered with ice.
There are also a few nuances to consider:
- Cloudless sky and no precipitation.
- No artificial light.
- Sub-zero temperature.
Norway
The aurora is best seen in the northern part of the country. We recommend going to Tromso. Many excursions are organized here.
During the polar night, when it is completely dark, you can see killer whales and humpback whales in Tromso. Be sure to take a ride on the Fjellheisen cable car. You can also admire the magical lights from it.
If you dream of a vacation surrounded by unspoiled nature and without the hustle and bustle, head to Bude. Rago National Park is located nearby. It is home to several waterfalls and lakes.
Canada
We recommend going to Yellowknife. The fabulous phenomenon can be observed here 240 days a year. By the way, the city is considered the "capital" of the northern lights in the country.
Despite the harsh winter, there are many hotels and campsites here. Tourists are given special clothes that keep them warm in the most severe frosts. It is said that the probability of seeing the "lights" is 95%.
And, of course, visit Churchill, Manitoba. Bright rays appear here as many as 300 nights a year. By the way, a research station has been built in the town.
United States of America
Start your trip in Fairbanks, Alaska. The location is on the banks of the Tanana River. Winters here are long and cold.
It is home to the Geophysical Institute, which publishes forecasts of when the phenomenon can be seen. Mostly the sky is illuminated four days a week. Here, tourists can go to the Arctic Circle, snowshoe, and ride the Alaska Winter Train.
Greenland
Believe it or not, the best place to admire the lights is near the country's largest airport – Qangerlussuaq.
The island has preserved its pristine beauty, as most of the center is remote and uninhabited. The fabulous spectacle can be observed 300 days a year.
By the way, tourists often pitch tents on the neighboring ice glacier and stay overnight.
Iceland
With the onset of autumn, the day in these parts becomes very short, and darkness begins in the early evening and lasts until late morning.
Bright rays can be seen in Reykjavik. Here you can rent a car and travel to remote places. Be sure to take a walk along the Laugavegur trail. The hiking trail stretches for 55 kilometers. There are special mountain huts along the route where you can stay overnight.
