In the Europa League match, a decisive goal in the 13th added minute was canceled due to a rare rule. Video.
The match of the sixth round of the Europa League group stage between French side Rennes and Spanish side Villarreal was marked by a real drama. The video assistant referee (VAR) canceled the Breton goal in stoppage time due to a rare situation in football.
Both teams secured a place in the playoffs ahead of schedule, and in a face-to-face confrontation decided the fate of the first place in the quartet. At the same time, the home team in Rennes was satisfied with a draw to avoid head-to-head matches.
The rivals staged a shootout, scoring five goals, three of which went into the French team's goal. In order to win the group, Rennes needed to equalize.
In the 10th stoppage time, the home team earned a free kick. After Enzo Li Fe's shot, the ball hit the post and ended up in his feet again. The midfielder made a pass to his partner, who sent it to the opponent's goal, where Lorenz Assignon sent the ball into the net after a rebound.
The stands and players began to celebrate, but referee Atilla Karaoglan from Turkey canceled the goal after a VAR tip. This happened because the ball bounced off the bar to Li Fe without hitting any of the players, which is prohibited by the rules. That is why the referee awarded a free kick towards the Spanish goal.
As a result, Villarreal retained the victory and entered the Europa League playoffs from the first place.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, Shakhtar Donetsk lost to Portuguese Porto and failed to qualify for the Champions League playoffs. Now the Ukrainians can become rivals of Rennes in the knockout matches of the LE.
