A 20-year-old Muscovite is likely to remain disabled
The famous Russian gymnast Lala Kramarenko had a healthy meniscus removed by mistake during a leg surgery, the head coach of the Russian rhythmic gymnastics team Irina Viner said. After the operation, Kramarenko spent a month in Israel undergoing recovery procedures, but it was impossible to correct the mistake.
The coach criticized the doctor, calling his actions unacceptable, and said she would have deprived him of his diploma.
"There are two horns there, one horn was damaged, and the other horn was beautiful. So the doctor who performed [the surgery] removed the healthy horn," Wiener said in an interview on Nadiya Strelets' YouTube channel.
Iryna Wiener expressed regret for what happened and emphasized that she supports the athlete despite the current situation. She noted that she is trying to help Lala return to sports, even if she fails.
For reference: Lala Kramarenko is one of the most titled Russian gymnasts. She is a three-time world junior champion, 2021 European team champion, and multiple junior Grand Prix winner.
In 2019, the 20-year-old Muscovite won three gold medals at the first-ever World Junior Championships, proving her skills in individual events and team competitions. At the adult level, Lala continued to show strong results, winning medals at international tournaments and championships in Russia.
Her achievements include winning the 2024 Russian Championships and numerous golds at international tournaments, including an all-around victory at the 2022 Cup of the Fittest. Her performances are not only technically advanced, but also bright - in the final of the 2022 Russian Cup, she used glowing maces, which became one of the most memorable moments of her career. Lala was also honored with the 2024 National Sports Award as the Pride of Russia: Athlete of the Year".
She is the daughter of the famous Azerbaijani goalkeeper Dmitri Kramarenko and the granddaughter of the Soviet goalkeeper and coach Sergey Kramarenko.
