In New Orleans (Louisiana, USA), a car drove into a crowd of people in the busy Bourbon Street area during the New Year's Eve celebration. At least 12 people died as a result of the tragedy.
About 50 more people were injured. Newsweek reported this.
A spokesman for the New Orleans Police Department confirmed that the incident resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities. The local emergency management agency issued a warning on social media, calling the incident a "mass casualty incident."
Residents and visitors to New Orleans were urged to avoid busy areas. Law enforcement officials are working to ensure security and gather information.
Eyewitnesses said that after the collision with the crowd, the driver of the vehicle started firing his weapon, which led to a shootout with the police.
The attacker's motives are still unknown. Local authorities reported that the investigation is ongoing and additional information will be provided soon.
The mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell, called the car attack on the crowd a terrorist attack. At the same time, the FBI reported the discovery of improvised explosive devices after a car hit a crowd in New Orleans. According to preliminary data, the attacker was eliminated.
