Italian scientists have discovered a 2000-year-old sarcophagus called the Tomb of Cerberus near Naples. Inside, archaeologists came across an ancient mummy that had been kept in the tomb for several millennia.

According to scientists, the remains of the ancient inhabitants remained in good condition thanks to special plant-based solutions that covered the bodies of the dead. The discovery will help researchers learn more details about the embalming of the dead in ancient Rome, the Daily Mail reports.

The "Tomb of Cerberus", located in the city of Giugliano in Campania, was first discovered by archaeologists in 2023. A large number of burials dating back to the Roman Republic (510 BC - 31 BC) were discovered in this area. New research has shown that the building was the entrance to a tomb containing an ancient fresco depicting the mythological guardian of the underworld, the three-headed Cerberus.

In order to get into the burial chamber, the scientists had to carefully remove a slab of tuff, a mountain sedimentary rock that covered the ceiling opening. The scientists used a small camera to get a better look at the preserved mummies.

According to the researchers, one of the bodies was covered with a white shroud and surrounded by a large number of personal belongings. Scientists removed a white piece of cloth from the deceased and found that the face was in good condition. Experts suggest that the deceased could have been the founder of the family for whom the sarcophagus was built.

Scientists noted that the remains of the representative of the ancient people were preserved in almost perfect condition due to proper care. The body of the deceased was covered with a mixture made of wormwood and quinoa, which was often used to embalm mummies.

"In fact, in recent months, laboratory analyzes conducted on samples taken from burials have provided a significant amount of data on the handling of the deceased's body and the funeral ritual, which has greatly enriched the panorama of our knowledge," said scientist Mariano Nuzzo.
