Impressive video: a whale swallowed a man and then spat him out
Off the coast of Chilean Patagonia, a humpback whale swallowed a young man and then spat him out. A few meters away from the "lucky man" was his father, who filmed incredible footage of his son being almost eaten.
This short-lived video went viral online. And the "swallowed" kayaker Adrian Simancas says he is happy to be alive after such an incredible adventure, the BBC reports.
The Venezuelan kayaker was sailing through the Strait of Magellan off the Chilean coast of Patagonia with his father, Dell Simancas, when he felt as if something "hit" him from behind, "approached" him, and "drowned" him.
"It took me a second to realize that I was in someone's mouth, that maybe I was being eaten, that it could have been an orca or a sea monster," the 23-year-old said.
"I closed my eyes, and when I opened them again, I realized that I was in the mouth of a whale. I felt a slippery texture touching my face. I wondered what I could do if it swallowed me. But I could no longer fight to stop it. I started to think about what to do next," Adrian described these horrific memories.
When his whole life flashed before his eyes, he felt as if he was rising to the surface again.
"I was a little afraid if I could hold my breath because I didn't know how deep I was. But I swam out in two seconds, finally made it to the surface, and realized that I wasn't eaten," Simankas continued.
Adrian's father, Dell Simankas, watched the incident in a neighboring kayak. "I felt scared when I saw my son was gone. I didn't see him for about three seconds. And suddenly he swam out from under the water," Dall shared his memories, ScienceAlert reports.
"Then I noticed something gigantic nearby, and I immediately realized it was a whale because of its size," added Adrian's father.
Dell Simankas had a camera on his boat. So he accidentally managed to capture incredible footage of his son's adventures, which have already gone viral after being posted online.
When Andrian watched the footage, he was amazed by the size of the whale that tried to eat him. However, experts reassure him that the humpback could never swallow a man with a boat.
Brazilian conservationist Roshed Jacobson Seba said that humpback whales have a narrow throat "the size of a household pipe" designed to swallow small fish and shrimp.
"They physically cannot swallow large objects like kayaks, tires, or even large fish like tuna. That's why it spit out the boy," the expert said.
The conservationist suggested that the humpback whale probably accidentally swallowed Adrian.
"At that moment, the whale could have been feeding on a school of fish and inadvertently scooped up the kayak along with the food. When whales swim to the surface too quickly while eating, they can accidentally swallow extra objects in their path," said Roshed Jacobson Seba.
