Battle Royale
This 2000 Japanese dystopia is considered to be a benchmark of the genre. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic future. The economic crisis and the growth of juvenile delinquency push the Japanese authorities to a cruel experiment. Once a year, a class of schoolchildren is selected and taken to an island where they fight to the last survivor. But this time, the battle will be joined by heroes who will try to break the rules. By the way, it was after this movie that the whole genre of multiplayer video games in which users compete for survival was named. For example, this is one of the modes of the shockingly popular Fortnite.
Alice in Borderland
Another iconic example of the genre from Japan, but this time as a series. In the story, the protagonist, an avid gamer, finds himself in a devastated Tokyo. There is no one around except for a few of his friends. They have to compete in dangerous games, the price of losing which is death. A sudden meeting leads the protagonist to uncover a dark secret. The series ran for two seasons and is expected to return for the third one this year.
Cube
The 1997 Canadian film tells the story of a group of strangers who find themselves locked in a maze of interconnected cube-shaped rooms against their will. Each room contains a death trap. The players have no food or water, so they have to get out as quickly as possible. That is, their opponents are their own fears and inexorable time. Each next step brings them only one more danger. The film was so popular with the audience that it grew into a franchise, with the feature-length Cube 2: Hypercube and Cube Zero coming later.
Annihilation
One day, a meteorite falls to Earth and the mysterious Area X is formed at the site of its impact, where flora, fauna and even the laws of nature are changed beyond recognition. No one is able to explore this area because the researchers die or return completely different. However, the need to study it is becoming increasingly important as the area expands, threatening to take over the entire world. The biologist Lena, whose husband managed to escape, decides to enter it. She joins the all-female group to find the key to his return. They will have to fight the unknown and their own deepest fears. Will everyone manage to win this race for survival?
The Condemned
The main character of the film, Joe Conrad, finds himself in a prison in Central America. He has been sentenced to death and is waiting for the execution in solitary confinement. One day, however, he receives an offer from a TV producer who wants to organize a "battle royale" between ten death row inmates. They are all dropped off on a deserted island dotted with surveillance cameras. Now they have to live according to the law of the jungle, where the strongest survives. If he wins, he will get freedom. But over time, it turns out that Joe is not who he says he is.
All of Us Are Dead
Another South Korean series about the race for survival. It was released on the wave of the popularity of the first season of Squid Game, but it based on a webtoon that was released from 2009 to 2011. In the story, a zombie virus outbreak begins in a high school. It was a father of one of the students, who wants to protect his son from bullies, who accidentally created it. The disease spreads like wildfire. A group of schoolchildren and teachers who are lucky enough not to be infected will not only have to resist the crowds of zombies, but also fight each other for survival.
The Purge
This is not just one movie, but a whole franchise from the legendary Blumhouse studio. All of them are united by the setting of a dystopian America, where The Purge is held once a year. It is a national holiday when restrictions on any crime, including murder, are lifted for 12 hours, and all emergency services cease to operate. This is how the government lets citizens blow off steam, and the dead are seen as victims in the name of the purge. Those who do not want to play this game will have to do everything to survive the terrible 12 hours and meet the dawn.
