Hungary ready to compromise with EU on aid package for Ukraine

Today, January 29, the Hungarian government announced its readiness for a compromise that would allow it to provide the aid package to Ukraine proposed by the European Union (EU). The decision may be made before the emergency summit on Thursday, February 1.

The aid package is worth 50 billion euros. This is stated in the material of Reuters.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has previously actively criticized the bloc's financial and military support for Ukraine and is known for his pro-Kremlin policies. Earlier, he blocked the revision of the EU budget, which included aid to Ukraine, prompting its leaders to come up with a "plan B" and convene an emergency summit. However, on Monday, an Orban adviser said Hungary was open to using the EU budget for the proposed package.

An aide to Balázs Orbán confirmed that Budapest sent a proposal to Brussels on Saturday, demonstrating that it is open to using the EU budget for the aid package and issuing EU common debt to finance it, if other "reservations" are added.

Earlier it was reported that on January 17 this year, MEPs agreed on a draft resolution on Hungary, which should result in Hungary's deprivation of voting rights in the EU Council. And on January 18, the European Parliament adopted this resolution by 345 votes to 104, calling on the EU Council to activate Article 7 against Hungary.

In addition, it was decided to launch an internal investigation into the European Commission's decision to allocate 10 billion euros to Budapest.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, the EU threatens to "hit" Hungary's economy if Orban vetoes the aid to Ukraine. Brussels plans to collapse the Hungarian forint and reduce Hungary's investment attractiveness in order to harm "jobs and growth" of the country's economy.
