Whether for work or school, traveling or shopping, a backpack is the perfect everyday accessory for those who are always on the go. But the more often you use your backpack, the dirtier it gets and the sooner it needs to be washed.

Caring for a backpack differs depending on the material it is made of. OBOZ.UA asked professional life hacks on how to properly clean this type of bag. We will also tell you how to properly wash a backpack in the machine.

Proper machine wash of a backpack

Start by checking the label with recommendations on how to care for your backpack. It will tell you if it is even safe to put it in the drum. If so, prepare the item for washing by removing all items from it and unzipping all pockets.

Pre-treat any stains with a liquid color-safe detergent. Spray the liquid directly into the stains and then wait 10 minutes. Put your backpack in a mesh laundry bag and zip it shut.

Put the item in the drum, select the delicate cycle, low spin and low temperature. Add a minimum of detergent and start the program. When it is finished, take the backpack out of the laundry bag and hang it upside down to air dry.

How to deep clean your backpack

If you notice that your backpack has mold or a musty smell, washing it alone won't cut it - you'll need to deep clean it. Take everything out of the backpack at once to prevent the mold from spreading to its contents. Unfasten all the small parts. Again, check the instructions on the tag to choose the right products.

Be sure to test the color fastness of the bleach in an inconspicuous area. Even if you are completely sure that the dye will not be affected or if you have a white backpack. Dilute chlorine bleach at the rate of one cap per liter of warm water and soak the item in this solution for 10 minutes. Then drain the solution and wash the backpack according to the instructions in the previous paragraph, but add the maximum allowed dose of bleach to the detergent.

How to wash a backpack by hand

If for some reason you cannot machine wash your backpack, clean it by hand. To do this, soak the item in bleach. But choose a delicate product that is safe for color.

Start as usual by emptying your backpack and unfastening all the zippers. Next, make enough soaking solution at the rate of 1 cap of product per liter of water and put your backpack in it for 10 minutes.

Take the item out of the solution, let it drain, and pour off the liquid. Prepare a detergent solution this time. Take about a tablespoon of powder or gel per bowl of water. Place your backpack in the soapy water and rinse, rubbing the solution into the seams and corners. Rinse thoroughly until no more foam appears in the water. Hang the unzipped backpack upside down to air dry.

Why you shouldn't dry your backpack in the dryer

If you've noticed, all methods of washing a backpack recommend air drying it without using a machine. The thing is that even on a delicate machine drying cycle, some parts of the item can be damaged. For example, applications, plastic fittings and even some synthetic fibers used in the lining and more.
