We all know how important it is to wash our hair regularly to keep it clean and healthy. However, the tools used to care for it also need to be cleaned.

A dirty hair brush can have a negative impact on your health. That's why trichologists and other experts told Vogue how to take care of your hairbrush.

When you comb your hair with a dirty hairbrush, you transfer all the dirt, dead skin cells, and bacteria that have accumulated there. In the worst case, this can lead to irritation or skin infections. To avoid this, you need to clean your combs regularly.

How often should I wash my hairbrushes?

Firstly, after each use, you should remove any hair residue from the brush.

Secondly, how often you need to wash your hairbrushes depends on the material they are made of and your hair type.

For example, you usually need to wash hairbrushes made of synthetic materials once a week, but if you have thick or coarse hair, you can do it every two weeks.

If you use styling products or hairsprays, you need to wash your brushes even more often. However, if your combs are made of wood, you can clean them less often.

How to clean a hairbrush?

Synthetic brushes made of non-porous materials such as silicone, hard plastic or rubber are easy to clean. All you need is water and shampoo.

First, remove all hair from the brush and then soak it in soapy water for about 10-15 minutes.

If you use wooden combs or brushes made of natural materials, spray them with soapy water from a spray bottle, rub off any dirt with your hands, rinse with warm water, and hang them up to dry.

Vinegar

Food grade vinegar will help get rid of sebum and products containing polymers, such as hairsprays and gels. In addition, vinegar has antibacterial properties.

If you need to thoroughly clean your brush, mix vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio and soak your brush in this solution for about 15-30 minutes. Then rinse it thoroughly under running water and dry it.
