Decorative pillows add coziness, comfort, and individuality to an interior. However, they are not easy to care for. Regular cleaning should not be neglected, as they can become a real breeding ground for bacteria, dust mites, and even fungal spores.

Decorative pillows should be cleaned relatively frequently, especially if they are constantly used. Experts say that the cleaning process largely depends on whether they have removable covers.

Pre-treating stains

To choose the right cleaning solution for pretreating stains, the first step is to determine the type of fabric of the cover. Cotton, wool, or a blend of wool and polyester can be cleaned with a mild upholstery cleaner.

You can also make your cleaner by mixing equal parts vinegar and alcohol in a spray bottle with a couple of drops of essential oil for a pleasant scent. Keep in mind that delicate satin, silk, and suede require a cleaner that is specifically suited to this type of fabric.

Before washing, always check the cushion for colorfastness. To do this, soak a small corner in warm water and detergent for 2-3 minutes and then pat dry with a paper towel. If the dye does not come off, your product should be resistant, but check the label for additional care instructions.

How to wash decorative pillows with removable covers

• Remove the covers from the decorative pillows and check them for any stains that need to be treated before washing.
• Follow the instructions on the care label. Washing with a gentle detergent in warm water is the best option for machine-washable pillowcases.

For hand-wash only covers

• Fill a sink, tub, or other container with warm water and add a few drops of mild detergent. Allow the covers to soak for a few minutes before gently scrubbing at stains.
• Drain and rinse the pillowcase in warm water.
• Gently squeeze out any excess moisture. Hang the pillowcases to dry or place them on the dryer.

How to wash decorative pillows without removable covers

When cleaning decorative pillows that do not have a removable cover, pay attention to both the outer fabric of the pillow and the insert. First, remove any dust, hair, wool, or debris.

Follow the method indicated on the care label. If there are no instructions, use a small amount of gentle detergent and select the gentle cycle.

To hand wash, add a small amount of detergent to the sink or bathtub, and soak the pillow by gently pressing on it until it is completely submerged and soaked. Gently scrub the stains and the surface as a whole. Additionally, rinse the pillow with warm water and remove excess moisture.

Covers made of silk, suede, leather, and satin usually need to be hand-washed or dry-cleaned, while polyester and cotton are safe for machine washing.

How to dry decorative pillows

Beware of potential residual dampness, which can lead to a musty odor or mold. To avoid this, hang the pillows to dry on a clothesline or in another well-ventilated area.
