An unusual odor is one of the first signals of trouble. When bed bugs feel threatened, they emit so-called alarm pheromones that have a faint smell of raspberries, cilantro, or almonds, and in severe cases, this smell can be mixed with the smell of dead bugs and the remaining cell membranes, which creates a rusty smell.
Another sign is waking up with red, itchy wounds. These bites, which are often found on the arms and legs, can appear in small groups or as individual marks. These bites are usually not dangerous, but some people may be allergic, so if you experience severe itching, swelling, or fever, it is extremely important to seek medical attention.
Blood stains on sheets or pillowcases can also signal the presence of bed bugs, as they sometimes crush themselves when they bite.
Bed bugs molt several times during different stages of their life cycle, which means that their shells can come in different sizes, but you can spot them by their yellow, translucent appearance in seams, folds, and crevices of mattresses or even in other places like cracks in walls and furniture.
Bed bug eggs are hard to spot, being only about 1 mm long, but they resemble tiny rice grains in your bed, often sticking to various surfaces such as seams and joints of the mattress or behind the headboard.
Shells are another sign to look out for. Shells are a sign of a severe bed bug infestation because these pests shed their skin at different stages of life.
