How to stimulate orchid flowering even in winter: the Swedish gardeners' method

Yulia PoteriankoNews

Many indoor plant lovers have encountered this problem –an orchid bought in a store, having bloomed once, does not want to bloom again. If this describes you, you are not alone in this problem, and what's more, it has an effective solution.

According to Interia Kobieta, the key to waking up a flower even in winter is the method of Swedish gardeners. For this method, you will need a vase that will help to imitate the natural habitat of this plant, as well as certain home-made fertilizing ingredients.

The Swedish method

This life hack will help you wake up even a very deeply sleeping orchid. But you need to apply it with all the attention to the plant.

Start by taking an ordinary vase in which you can put the entire flower with its roots. Fill it up to halfway with water. Then take the flower out of the pot it lives in and use a soft brush to clean its roots. Be careful not to damage the roots. Then place the prepared plant in a vase and place it in a sunny place.

The key thing is to remember to change the water regularly. In no case should it be allowed to become cloudy. Fresh water must be settled or filtered and at room temperature. In such conditions, the orchid should spend just a few days. After that, it should wake up and delight you with new flowers.

Why does the Swedish gardeners' method work? Because it recreates the natural conditions of an orchid in rainy weather.

Also, we must not forget about the basic rules of orchid care. Let's start with flower pots. Transparent containers with drainage holes are best. Thanks to them, you can easily monitor the condition of the roots. When they turn silver, it signals that it's time to water the flower. The next point is the soil. Orchids are planted in a loose substrate that freely passes air and practically does not retain moisture. It is also important to fertilize the flowers regularly but carefully. The Swedes use low-concentration fertilizers designed specifically for orchids and apply them every 2-3 weeks.

Fertilizers for orchid care

You can also make your own orchid fertilizer. One of the most effective is a fertilizer based on banana peels. This product contains many minerals necessary for normal plant growth. These include sulfur, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus. There are two ways to prepare banana peel fertilizer for an orchid.

The first method

Chop the banana peel, then place it in a clean glass jar with a lid and cover with water. Put the jar in a dark place for about 2 weeks. Remember to stir the contents daily. During this time, the fertilizer will mature by itself. To use it, you need to dilute it with water in a 1:1 ratio. Apply the product during watering or spray the orchid with it.

The second method

You can also place the crushed banana peel directly into the flower pot. It is best to do this 2-3 weeks before planting or transplanting the plant. This way, the product will naturally decompose and nourish the substrate. However, it is important to use a small amount of banana peel. An excess of fertilizer is even more harmful to an orchid than a lack of it.
