On the morning of July 19, Microsoft Azure and Crowdstrike programs experienced a large-scale outage. As a result, users running the Windows operating system and CrowdStrike Falcon software faced several problems.

Fortunately, most Ukrainian organizations have already fully or partially resumed operations. However, if you still experience PC malfunctions, you should use the troubleshooting tips from the State Special Communications Service of Ukraine.

In cases where your system is experiencing a critical issue, one of the most effective strategies to restore stability is to run Windows in Safe Mode. It allows you to boot the operating system in a basic mode with a limited set of drivers and services, which can help identify and resolve the problem without the influence of third-party programs. This is especially useful if the problem is not caused by the default settings.

If you are having trouble starting your computer after CrowdStrike crashes, use these instructions:

  • Boot Windows in Safe Mode or Windows Recovery;
  • Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike directory;
  • Find the file named "C-00000291*.sys" and delete it;
  • Restart your computer or server.
  • Use this method while CrowdStrike is working on fixing the problem and will not provide official information.

How to start your PC in Safe Mode

  • Open "Options" or "Settings";
  • Click "Update and repair";
  • In the "Additional startup options" section, select the "Restart now" item. If you can't open the settings, restart the device from the Windows login screen while holding down the Shift key. You can also start the Windows Recovery environment by restarting the device three times by long pressing the power button.

  • After the PC restarts, you will see a list of options. Choose option 4 or press F4 to start your PC in Safe Mode. Or, if you need to use the Internet, select option 5 or press F5 for Network-enabled Safe Mode.
