How to soften towels without chemicals: this natural ingredient will help
It may sound surprising, but the biggest mistake people make when washing towels is using fabric softener, experts say.
If your towels are not as soft as they once were, you may not be washing them properly, but there is a quick and easy way to make them fluffy again in just one wash. OBOZ.UA will tell you about it.
Although fabric softeners are great for softening clothes, they have the opposite effect on towels. They leave residues that get into the fibers, causing towels to harden.
The best product for restoring towels' fluffiness can be found in your kitchen cabinet. Yes, plain white vinegar contains acetic acid, which makes it very effective in breaking down soap residue that causes them to lose their softness.
Adding a cup of vinegar during the wash can remove fabric softener residue and make the fibers fluffier. However, white vinegar alone may not be strong enough to do it during the first wash, and so you may need to wash them several times or add baking soda.
Just like vinegar, baking soda is used in a number of alternative cleaning methods. Add half a cup of baking soda to the laundry and it will react with any remaining softener and dissolve it. In addition, it can eliminate certain odors left due to dampness.
Using baking soda may be a better option than vinegar for those worried about odors and staining, as it is a more neutral substance that will not linger in any way.
It's best not to add vinegar and baking soda together in the same wash, as this can cause a foam reaction that can be irritating to clean.
How to properly wash towels to make them soft and fluffy again
First, check the label of your towels to find out what temperature is best to wash your towels and how long they should be in the washing machine.
If your towel doesn't have a label, you can find a similar product made from the same material online and follow the appropriate care instructions.
Then add a cup of vinegar (240 ml) to the detergent compartment of your washing machine. Use the usual laundry detergent, but do not use fabric softener.
Turn on the washing machine and run a hot wash cycle, following the washing instructions on the towel label. After the wash is complete, run the second rinse and add half a cup of baking soda (120 g) to the washing machine drum along with the towels.
