The beginning of fall is an important time for lovers of tulips, daffodils, lilies and other bulb flowers. If you want them to bloom in your garden next spring, it's time to take care of planting, transplanting and fertilizing these wonderful plants.

How to do it correctly, told the publication "Yourself Agronomist". As an example, they took tulips, because they bloom one of the first.

When to plant tulips in the fall

In our climate in the fall, planting tulips should be carried out from mid-September to mid-October. Until the soil begins to freeze, there should be at least 2-3 weeks. This is how long it takes for the bulbs to take root, but not to sprout. In this case, the plant will overwinter well.

How to plant tulip bulbs

To make the flower feel good, the bulb should be buried in the ground to a depth equal to three of its size. The average size of the planting material is 4-5 cm, so bury it at 12-15 cm. If the bulb is small, 8-10 cm will suffice.

However, also take into account the properties of the soil. If your site is heavy varieties - clay or loam - then the depth of planting tulips can be reduced. The distance between the bulbs should be 7-10 cm, the flower needs space to develop well.

Dig holes, place the bulbs in them with the roots downwards and then cover the top with the same soil. Water to help the tulips release their roots. You won't need to cover the bed for the winter or water it during the colder months.

How to prepare tulip bulbs for planting

If you want all your tulips to sprout in the spring, take care to protect them from various diseases before planting, especially rotten ones. To do this, soak them in suitable preparations, which can be purchased at any garden center. Advice on the choice can be obtained from the sellers. Also suitable is a solution of manganese solution of bright pink color. In it, tulip bulbs are incubated for 30 minutes.

How to properly dig a hole for planting tulips

To make your flowers take root better, it is better not to plant them in unprepared soil. It can be too dense and the plant will not have time to grow roots in it. Therefore, before planting, make holes in the ground, deeper than necessary, and at the bottom pour a layer of loose humus or compost.

Will help faster rooting and the addition of phosphorus-potassium fertilizer. One tablespoon is enough for about 10 bulbs. Just pour a small amount into the planting hole.

The prepared fertile layer is better to cover with a small layer of clean river sand and wood ash. Such a cushion will keep the bulbs from excessive moistening and rotting.

Flowers that have time to take root, in the spring will quickly break out of the ground and bloom as soon as the optimal weather is established. But do not forget to replant tulips every 3-4 years, so that they are not cramped in the bed. In this case, the flowers will begin to shrink.
