If you're working on a project and find that the screw is rusted and you don't have a screwdriver at hand, don't panic right away. A simple and reasonable solution for a stuck screw is quite easy to find.

An unexpected tool can help. Experts tell us how to unscrew rusted screws with a popular drink.

An effective tool

Coca-Cola is able to remove rust thanks to the phosphoric acid in its composition. Some experts claim that carbonation also helps to destroy rust, but there is little scientific evidence for this. However, phosphoric acid has been proven to remove rust by replacing the chemical with another that is easier to remove.

Soda also contains phosphoric acid and has a pH of about 2.6. It works on rust stains, but it is not strong enough to remove serious deposits. Coca-Cola is a great option if you want to avoid using harsh chemicals.

Step-by-step instructions

  • Gently tap the screw with a hammer to try to knock off some of the rust.
  • Pour the drink directly onto the stuck screw and wait at least 10 minutes for the acid to take effect.
  • The rust around the screw can be wiped off with aluminum foil.
  • Phosphoric acid causes a chemical reaction that changes the rust, making it easier to clean or rinse off.
  • Once you've managed to unscrew it, it's worth soaking it in baking soda to help further loosen the rust.

This simple life hack also removes rust from garden tools and should work with any rusty metal surface.
