How to load a washing machine correctly: a discussion has broken out online

Recently, a debate has erupted online about the correct amount of laundry to put in a washing machine to ensure that your clothes are properly washed.

It all started when one TikTok user posted a video of herself loading the washing machine halfway, saying that it was because this way "there is enough room in the washing machine to move the clothes around so that the clothes are properly cleaned."

In this regard, an appliance expert told us how to load the washing machine, and it seems that we have been doing it wrong all along.

Matt Ayres from RDO Kitchens and Appliances took part in the debate below this video. The expert confirmed that for best results, we should aim to load our machines to about 75% of full capacity.

"It's important to be economical when filling your washers and tumble dryers while ensuring you get the best performance from your appliances. Different sizes of washing machines are available, from small to medium to large loads, which can hold over 10 kg of clothes during use. Washing machine capacity is always measured by the weight of dry clothes," he wrote.

Information about the load size of the machines can be found either on the machine itself or in the user manual, which indicates the maximum amount of clothes that the washing machine can hold.

"When loading the machine, make sure that you do not tamp the laundry. The laundry should be in a loose pile, so if you have to push the laundry to fit more, you are overloading your washing machine," the expert explained.

He explained that by leaving a little space, you give your clothes room to move, and at the same time, water and detergent can effectively clean your clothes.
