Houseplants don't just contribute to the aesthetics of an interior. They can also play a significant role in air purification and even help keep you cool in the summer heat.

In the face of electricity shortages, we all try to keep rooms without air conditioning cool. Experts have shared some simple tricks with houseplants to help cool your home.

Tip 1

We know how houseplants can help reduce condensation and humidity, but we often overlook how they also help improve indoor air quality and make us feel cooler.

Craig Morley, horticulture expert at Budget Seeds, says it's all about transpiration. Transpiration is the process by which water flows upward through a plant, from the soil to the leaves and stem. In addition to delivering water and nutrients to the cells, this process keeps plants cool as water evaporates from the leaves.

Transpiration also cools a certain area around it, meaning that indoor plants can really help cool a room in the summer.

The first step is to adjust the watering regime. Lack of regular watering can reduce the rate of transpiration as the plant tries to conserve water. It is worth buying a spray bottle to spray the plants periodically.

Tip 2

Create concentrated clusters by moving houseplants into one area to maximize the benefits of the transpiration process.

When moving plants, make sure you group them in the coolest corner of the room, avoiding window sills or any place where direct sunlight is received.

Tip 3

This method is most commonly used when caring for a bonsai tree, but it is actually an easy way to improve the transpiration process for any plant during hot periods.

A tray of wet pebbles promotes evaporation. As the water evaporates from the tray, it creates a kind of dome of moisture around the plant.

Tip 4

Give the plants extra breathing room. The roots of plants in containers are often confined to a small space, which can cause a lack of moisture. A simple repotting is a great way to improve the growing conditions.

Tip 5

"Houseplants placed in an environment that doesn't meet their needs won't be as effective at cooling your home," Craig said.

Plants need to be properly cared for. Determine how much sunlight they need and what conditions will be optimal: arid or more humid.
