Many dogs can live peacefully with cats, often forming close relationships. However, sometimes this requires effort, as it often happens that cats make dogs nervous, or dogs scare cats.

Therefore, scientists conducted a study that showed that to avoid a fight, cats and dogs should be introduced gradually. That is, people who plan to take a new puppy home with their cat should consider letting them slowly get used to each other, The Guardian writes.

The Generation Pup Dogs Trust study, which has already registered more than 9,500 puppies, including 4,500 puppies with dog-cat interaction, studied the interaction between dogs and cats. Experts found that about 20% of pet owners introduce their new puppy to their cats immediately, and 18.9% do so in less than two hours. However, a gradual introduction of puppies and cats significantly increases the likelihood that they will get along.

According to the study, puppies who have been introduced to cats for more than one day, especially very young ones, are calmer and friendlier, which can help form a more harmonious relationship.

"The main advice is to introduce the animals really gradually," says Dr. Rachel Casey, a veterinary medicine and animal behaviorist.

She explains that the vast majority of dogs exhibit "undesirable" behaviors when they first meet a cat, including aggression. Less than 10% of puppies introduced to cats were calm and relaxed. Here are some practical tips published on the Dogs Trust research website:

Exchange scents

Scent is an extremely important form of communication for both dogs and cats. Use it to introduce your pets to each other before you bring home a new family member. Ask for a blanket or toy that smells like your new pet. Put it down so that your pet can explore it on its own. Similarly, pass the blanket or toy that smells like your pet to the person who currently has your future pet so that they get used to the smell.

During the first week that you bring your new pet home, you can continue to "change the scents" by exchanging litter elements.

Create separate areas

Create a main area for each animal where they will feel safe while eating, drinking, resting, and going to the bathroom. Make sure they both have access to all their resources without coming into contact with each other.

Use physical barriers

Make a plan to keep your pets separated with physical barriers, such as baby gates or keeping doors closed, at least at first. Chasing is very rewarding for dogs, so it's very important that they don't practice this behavior with cats. Your cat should never be forced to be in the same room as your dog. They should also have access to escape routes if they feel threatened.
