How to install new firmware on AirPods yourself: Apple's instructions
Apple regularly releases new firmware for AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. Previously, the company provided limited information on how to install the new firmware yourself.
However, Apple recently released official information with more specific instructions. The details were provided by MacRumors.
The firmware update comes automatically when AirPods are charging and are within Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to Wi-Fi.
"You can also use your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to check if your AirPods are up to date," the post says.
How to update AirPods firmware
Apple has released step-by-step instructions for a manual update, including troubleshooting steps if your AirPods won't update.
- Make sure AirPods are within Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to Wi-Fi.
- Place AirPods in the charging case and close the lid.
- Connect the charging cable to the charging case, then plug the other end of the cable into a USB charger or port.
- Keep the charging case lid closed and wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.
- Open the charging case lid to reconnect AirPods to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Check the firmware version again.
If you still can't update the firmware, reset your AirPods and then try updating the firmware again.
By the way, 2025 is going to be a pretty busy period for Apple. The company has plans for an updated iPhone lineup, new artificial intelligence features, smart home push, and Apple Watch SE.
