How to improve the growth of a "lazy" monstera: an easy way

Yulia PoteriankoNews

Monstera is one of the favorite houseplants around the world. Caring for it is not too burdensome, and it looks very decorative.

However, the plant can stop growing due to a lack of nutrients in the soil. In this case, the luxurious foliage of the monstera can lose its luster, and the tropical vine itself can become thin and start to wither. A simple fertilizer that can be quickly prepared from a product that is available in every kitchen will help bring it back to life. The Interia Kobieta publication shared the recipe in detail.

Bay leaves contain all the necessary elements that will help restore the monstera's condition. This spice can enrich the soil in a flower pot with potassium and phosphorus, as well as other useful substances. To do this, it is enough to prepare water for irrigation from bay leaves.

Take three dry leaves and pour a glass of boiling water over them. Put a lid on the container in which you are preparing the liquid fertilizer. When the infusion has cooled, you can use it immediately to water the Monstera. However, in order to avoid an overdose of nutrients, it is better to dilute it with clean, settled water in a 1:3 ratio before use. The monstera should be watered with this solution once a month in the warm season and once every three months in the cold season.

However, not only bay leaf is a kitchen product that can benefit your indoor plants. Here are some other fertilizer options that you can make at home.

  • Banana water – cut the peel of one banana into pieces, cover it with water, and put it in a dark place for two days. Strain the finished infusion and dilute it with water 1:3. This fertilizer will enrich the substrate in the pots with potassium.
  • Rice water – if you plan to cook rice for dinner, do not salt the dish in the pot. The water in which you cooked the grains can be a good fertilizer. But don't forget to dilute the broth.
  • Coffee grounds – the remains of the aromatic drink can be collected, dried, and used to feed indoor plants. Sprinkle a thin layer of grounds on the grounds in the pot and use a rake to mix them into the top layer of the substrate. The fertilizer will slowly release nutrients, primarily nitrogen, which will stimulate the growth of new leaves.
