How to get seats together on a plane without paying for it: flight attendant gave advice

Traveling abroad can be quite stressful, especially for inexperienced travelers or those with small children. In this case, you should sit next to your family or friends.

The Civil Aviation Authority says that parents don't have to pay for seats next to their children. However, this is a recommendation, not a strict rule. Airlines usually charge extra when buying tickets if passengers want to sit next to each other. Stewardess Jane Hawkes told The Express about the best ways to save money and travel with your loved ones without additional costs.

"Just wait until you board and then tell the flight attendants: 'We're traveling together and didn't know we were going to be separated,' and let the airline staff ask other passengers next to you, who may be very accommodating," Hawkes shared her trick.

Buying your tickets as early as possible usually allows you to get not only better seats but also to sit next to your companions. Even if check-in starts late at night or early in the morning, it's best to set an alarm to be on time.

Most airlines try to take into account the needs of people traveling with someone else when allocating seats. Therefore, most often, if there are free seats, a family or another group will not be deliberately separated. However, this is not a 100% guarantee, but if you want to save money, you will have to take a risk. Also, follow the rules of airline companies, as some of them allow you to book a seat on the plane for free immediately after paying for the ticket.

Participation in airline loyalty programs can give you an advantage when choosing seats, depending on your status and membership level. Some airlines offer special fares with the option to reserve a seat for free. However, you should first calculate whether it is profitable to buy a ticket that includes bonuses or whether it is cheaper to pay for the service separately.

For example, Ryanair offers a family package that includes free booking for children under 12 years old and the ability to take extra baggage. However, the "Value" package is more profitable than the "Regular" fare if you add priority boarding, baggage, and seats separately. Sometimes, this can save a family more than 80 euros.

At the same time, Norwegian Air offers the LowFare+ fare as an improvement of the standard fare. It includes seat reservation and baggage check-in for free, instead of 25 euros.
