How to fertilize an orchid before spring: tips for beginners
One of the most important aspects of caring for indoor plants is proper and timely fertilization. Fertilization is necessary to maintain the general condition, strengthen the root system, and provide the plant with all the necessary nutrients.
Regular fertilization helps to increase the number of buds, ensures rich and long-lasting flowering, and increases the plant's resistance to diseases and pests. Kobieta Interia experts told us about a little-known but effective organic fertilizer for orchids.
When to start fertilizing orchids
The timing of fertilization depends on the specific plant variety, but in general, the optimal period is early spring, when the flowers come out of dormancy.
Some experts advise waiting until April, although natural fertilizers can be used as early as February or early March. Nutrients are needed for an effective awakening after winter. Fertilizing will be an important signal for the plant to start growing and blooming more actively.
Homemade fertilizer for orchids
Garlic is not only a popular seasoning but also a vegetable with many useful properties. Experts advise using it to care for orchids.
Garlic contains natural compounds that help fight bacteria and fungi. It acts as an organic antibiotic for orchids, helping to protect them from diseases.
The intense smell of garlic repels pests such as aphids and spider mites that harm plants. In addition, garlic stimulates healthy root development and promotes more intense flowering.
How to make garlic fertilizer
Making garlic fertilizer is easy, and even beginners can do it. All you need is 3 cloves of garlic and 1 liter of boiling water.
- The garlic should be squeezed through a press or chopped very finely.
- Place the garlic in a jar and cover it with chilled water.
- Leave the mixture for 24 hours in a dark place so that the garlic releases all the nutrients.
- After a day, strain the liquid through cheesecloth and water the orchids.
Do not prepare a large amount of the mixture, as it loses its properties after two to three days. Processing can be carried out not only in spring but also throughout the growing season – once a month.
How garlic fertilizer affects orchids
Garlic fertilizer stimulates intense and long-lasting flowering of orchids. It also improves root growth and increases the plant's resistance to adverse conditions.
However, if this is your first experience with these flowers, try treating only one plant at first, not the entire collection. This way you can observe how it reacts to the fertilizer.
Thanks to such a simple and natural approach, orchids will bloom longer, and caring for them will become even easier and more enjoyable.
