How to determine the true age of a cat in human years: the exact scale
Do you know how old your cat is in human years? This is actually a very useful question to ask yourself, as it makes it much easier to understand how to care for your furry friend.
A British veterinarian with the nickname @cat_the_vet helped us to understand this issue by posting a video on TikTok. The woman named six different life stages that cats go through to give owners a better understanding of their pet's behavior.
Referring to the Cat Care for Life chart, she explains that a one-month-old kitten corresponds to a one-year-old child in human years, while a 25-year-old cat corresponds to 116 human years.
"By the time they turn six months old, they turn from an infant to a 10-year-old child," the doctor clarified.
When a cat reaches the age of 12 months, it can be perceived as a fully grown adult. However, experts advise to consider this period as a cat's childhood and youth. It ends when they turn two years old.
From three to six years old, they are considered adults. At this stage, cats are already mature, sensible, and simply enjoy their lives.
Between 7 and 10 years old, cats begin to show signs of aging, reaching the equivalent of a senior person, but they are far from being extremely old.
"Then we move into the senior and super senior categories, and we need to be more vigilant about issues such as arthritis, kidney disease, and overactive thyroid. Although many of our elderly cats can stay healthy during these years, our super seniors will need additional help," the veterinarian said.
