Yoga is a great way to keep your body in good shape. However, have you ever wondered how many harmful microorganisms accumulate on your mat? A mat can become a real breeding ground for mold and bacteria.

A quick spray with a natural detergent after each use will help control dirt and build-up. But if you neglect this rule, you should clean the surface with stronger products. Experts tell us how to clean a yoga mat.

How to clean a yoga mat with natural ingredients

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup of vinegar;
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda;
  • tea tree oil;
  • water.
  1. In a spray bottle, mix ½ cup of vinegar, 2 tablespoons of baking soda, and a few drops of tea tree oil. Add water.
  2. Spray the solution on a towel or microfiber cloth and wipe the rug.
  3. You can use this cleaner after each use to control the growth of dirt and bacteria.

How to clean your yoga mat with a steam cleaner

  1. Be sure to check the label and care instructions on your yoga mat before using a steam cleaner. Some materials can be damaged by high temperatures.
  2. Place your mat on a clean, flat surface. Steam the mat in a linear motion, using straight strokes along the length of the mat. Make sure the entire surface is steamed.
  3. Turn the mat over and repeat the process on the other side.

Kelly Turner, vice president of YogaSix, recommends using a steam cleaner at least once a month.

Vera Peterson, president of Molly Maid, added that some mats can be washed in a machine with a delicate mode without using bleach or aggressive agents, but first of all, it is worth checking the tips on the label.
