How to clean a backpack: life hacks for different materials

Your backpack should be cleaned regularly, as germs and odors accumulate in it. The first step is to check the care label, which is probably located in the main compartment. If it states that the backpack should not be immersed in water, use a cloth and a small amount of mild detergent to clean the soiled areas.

If there are no washing instructions, clean the backpack thoroughly before machine washing. Experts have explained how to effectively and safely clean backpacks made of different materials.

The preliminary stage

  • Empty the backpack.
  • Use a handheld vacuum cleaner. Remove crumbs and dust from the crevices by vacuuming each compartment.
  • For dirt that is difficult to remove, use a clean makeup brush. "The soft bristles will help loosen debris while minimizing damage to the fabric," explained Kali Shager, manager of Land's End, a fabric and materials company for backpacks.
  • If there is a metal frame inside, remove it. Leave all pockets open. Cut off any threads near the zippers so they don't get caught in the wash.
  • Pre-treat stains: add a small amount of product to the stains with a clean cloth and leave for 30 minutes before starting the wash.

How often to wash your backpack

You should wash your backpack at least once or twice a year. School vacations are the perfect time to wash your bags thoroughly. Every two weeks, try to clean the inside to remove crumbs and other debris. You should also deodorize your backpack every few months or whenever you notice an unpleasant odor.

Backpacks that are used as duffel bags for sports equipment or workout clothes may need to be washed more often.

How to wash a backpack in the washing machine

  • Most nylon or canvas backpacks are safe to put in the washing machine.
  • Use a small amount of detergent and run a gentle cycle in cold water.
  • It is better to wash the backpack separately so that it does not damage other clothes due to snagging straps and zippers.
  • Leave all zippers unzipped and hang the backpack upside down to dry. Tumble drying can damage the lining and cause tears at the corners.

How to wash your backpack by hand

  1. Fill a container with warm water and add a small amount of laundry detergent.
  2. Scrub the bag with a soft brush, focusing on particularly dirty areas or stains. Also clean the inside. A sponge may work better on mesh areas.
  3. Pour off the dirty water and fill a bowl with clean, cool water. Rinse the backpack thoroughly and wring it out.
  4. Fold the backpack in a thick towel to absorb excess moisture.
  5. Dry it in the fresh air

How to clean a leather backpack

  1. Add a small amount of a good quality leather cleaner or conditioner to a damp cloth and gently wipe off any dirt.
  2. Using a clean, damp cloth, wipe off any additional dirt or residue from the conditioner.
  3. Let the backpack dry at room temperature, out of direct sunlight.

How to deodorize the inside of a backpack

Baking soda and vinegar are the best options to get rid of unpleasant odors. Sprinkle baking soda on your backpack – or put the baking soda in an open box or bag at the bottom of your backpack – and leave it overnight. The baking soda will absorb all odors.

If you are using vinegar, wipe the inside of the bag with a paper towel soaked in vinegar and let it dry overnight. You can also add vinegar and citrus essential oils to a spray bottle and spray your backpack to dispel a strong odor. A fabric spray will hide the odor, but not eliminate it completely.
