How to care for currant bushes in the fall: there are a few rules that cannot be ignored

It would seem that the active season for gardeners is over. All that's left is to harvest the crops and enjoy the rest. There is no less work in the fall than in the summer: you need to fertilize the soil, plant green manure, prune, and take care of shelter for perennials.

It is in late September and early October that the ideal time comes to care for currant bushes. OBOZ.UA tells you what rules you should follow so as not to spoil the harvest next season.

How to care for currants in the fall

Experts advise universal fertilization:

• 6-8 kilograms of humus;
• 100-120 grams of superphosphate;
• 30-40 grams of potassium chloride.

All of this should be mixed and applied under the bush to a depth of 6-8 centimeters, near the root collar and 10-12 centimeters away from it.

Do not forget about abundant watering. In the fall, currants will need as much as 20-30 liters of water under the bush.

Mulch the soil with peat or humus.

In October, you will need to shallowly dig the soil under the bushes again to help retain moisture. The last mulching can be done with fallen leaves from trees, pine needles, pine, and spruce cones.

Branches that have begun to fall to the ground should be lifted and tied to the bush.

Do you need to prune

Pruning should be done in late fall. It is worth removing a fifth of the shoots so that the currant is not thickened and branched. To renew the shrubs and better fruiting in the next season, remove the oldest shoots, and cut out all pest-infested, diseased, and broken branches.

It is also important to treat currants for fungal diseases and disinfect the soil.
