How to care for an orchid to make it bloom more often: a step-by-step guide
Orchids are the favorite flowers of many - they are easy to care for and always look beautiful.
The only problem that often arises is waiting for the flowering period. Sometimes it is very long, and it takes a lot of effort to get the plant out of hibernation. Monique Kemperman, an expert on growing these flowers, shared how to solve this problem, Express writes.
According to her, January and February are the perfect time to buy a new orchid in a flower shop.
Orchids can also bloom in early spring, so if you already have an orchid from the previous year, it's worth waiting a little for it to delight you.
"Depending on the species, orchids can bloom anywhere from six to 10 weeks," Monique said. For those hoping to have an orchid bloom this spring, Monique has revealed her "step-by-step plan" to make it more likely.
Pruning
First, an orchid that has finished flowering should have its flower stems cut off "just above the bottom node."
Monique explains, "This way, the orchid knows it's time to put new energy into leaves and roots." Also, a fully brown root should be cut "at the very base of the plant."
Environment
The orchid should be kept in a room with a temperature of at least 15C throughout the season. "Put your orchid in a cool place (no lower than 15°C) with sufficient indirect sunlight," Monique added.
Water the plant when the soil is dry and during the growing season in spring and summer.
One thing you should never do is leave water on the leaves of an orchid, no matter what species it is.
The growing season is also supplemented with food fertilizer every two weeks to stimulate impressive flowering. Over time, the orchid will develop new flowers. It can take up to three months between the emergence of a new flower stem and the appearance of flowers, so be patient.
Repot your orchids every couple of years in the spring so that they surpise you with their lush flowering again and again.
