Blush is a classic and very common way to complete your makeup. They can create a fresh and radiant look and even become an unobtrusive accent.

However, improperly applied blush, on the contrary, gives the face a sickly look and can make it look older. Popsugar asked experts how to avoid this.

There are many more variations in blush application techniques than you might expect. What's more, every skin type, texture, and tone has specifics that need to be taken into account to achieve the desired effect, from enhancing cheekbones to giving skin a slightly tanned look.

Choose the right texture

There are three main blush formulas: cream, liquid, and classic powder. Cream blush is great for blending. It is enough to warm them up a little on the skin, and then you can distribute them even with your fingers. Liquid blush provides a less dense coverage and should be applied with a brush. Powder blushes must also be applied with a tool – a round soft brush or puff. However, this texture will be unstable, especially in hot weather.

Consider your skin type

People with sensitive skin almost always have some redness on their face. Therefore, before applying blush, you need to visually remove them so as not to increase the visibility of the problem. For this purpose, there are green concealers and various concealers.

If your skin is prone to acne, then it is most likely quite oily, so powder blush is better for you. Also, keep in mind that shimmering products can accentuate breakouts, so stick to matte textures.

Oily but not problematic skin is best combined with cream blush. This texture is also suitable for those with dry skin.

Choose the right shade

Another thing you need to consider is the color of blush that best suits your skin tone. People with fair skin tones should choose peach or cool pink colors. For medium skin tones, warmer colors, such as rose pink or coral, are better suited. Peachy brown tones or warm pink look good on olive skin. However, the most important thing is that you like the shade of blush. If you choose the color of the product according to all the laws, but it does not bring you joy, you are unlikely to feel confident with such makeup.

Don't forget about the event you're wearing makeup for

For everyday makeup, a light touch of your favorite shade is enough. Put a little product on your fingers and pat them on your cheekbones. If you have an important event coming up, take the time to contour your face well with blush.

Again, for a casual look, a little shine from a cream blush can add brightness to your skin. But if there will be photography at the event, keep in mind that the oils in a cream product can shine too much in the light of flashes. In this case, use a more saturated and pigmented powder blush. If you have a long day ahead, try combining the two products – apply a creamy texture and top it with a powder product of the appropriate shade for longevity.

Make up in good light

The light in which you do your makeup is crucial to your look. This is especially true for looks with shimmering blush. If it is too dark, you risk applying too much product and getting a painful blush effect. Ideally, you should do your makeup in daylight right in front of a window. If you don't have enough natural light in your room, buying a small, inexpensive ring lamp that can be attached to a mirror will be a good solution.

Change your blush application technique

Not only the type of blush is important, but also how you apply it. You can create many different looks by simply changing your application technique. If you have an elongated or oval face, apply blush directly under the apples of your cheeks to add volume and create the illusion of roundness. Applying blush to the cheekbones and then blending it upward and toward the temples will help to lengthen a round face.
