How to add volume to thin hair: a super-effective tool from the 90s is back in fashion

How to add volume to thin and sparse hair

Thin and sparse hair often causes discomfort to its owners. It slips out of the braid, doesn't hold its shape when styling, and doesn't create a good volume. In the 90s of the last century, owners of this type of hair often used hot curlers.

No matter how much it may seem now that this is an outdated method of curling, it still works to this day. Kaitlyn McLintock uses it to add volume to her fine hair, and that's why she told Who What Wear about her "secret weapon."

"Although I love my natural beachy texture, I still style my hair with heat tools. Usually, it's a curling iron to perfect the natural waves and smooth out any kinks. And when I want a lot of volume, I use hot curlers," Kaitlyn summarized.

According to Tatum Neill, Creative Director of the Aveda Institute of Arts and Sciences, "Hot curlers came into fashion in the 60s when women wanted salon-quality hairstyles that they could do at home. They were unusual for most women who followed fashion in the early 90s. Generally, people with straight hair types go for hot curlers. I also think it's for people who are looking for something quick and easy. Hot curlers make your hair light."

Modern hot curlers are gentle on hair. They heat up quickly and evenly and do not spoil curls. And it is very easy to use this styling method. You just need to divide the hair into strands and curl them from the tip to the scalp, securing them with clips.

"If you want your style to last for a few days, blow-dry your roots with a volumizing product to give your roots a directional lift. When you have achieved volume at the roots, you can use your hands to dry your hair to the ends so that it is not too straight. It is important not to stretch out all the elasticity of the hair before removing the curlers," Tatum Neill shares advice.

You also need to prepare your hair properly for curling. Kaitlyn advises to first dry your hair using mousse or foam, comb it, smooth it, and wrap it in hot curlers.

In particular, Kaitlyn shared a life hack on how to best curl your hair: "I would say that a lot of people curl it from the end, but I take it from the middle of the strand and wrap it around the ends of the hair first, and then curl it all the way to the scalp. This ensures that you get an even distribution of heat, meaning that the ends don't overheat and the middle of the length gets enough heat."
