"How did it not freeze?" In Cherkasy, in the middle of winter, a bird was spotted that should not have been in Ukraine

The breath of spring is already in the air, and birds are beginning to return from warm lands to their nests. One of the first birds to return to its home was the black redstart. 

However, ornithologists emphasize that these small birds return to Ukraine in March-April. The Cherkasy photographer who captured the turtledove wrote on the Facebook page of the Birdwatching in Ukraine group that he was surprised that it did not freeze.

"I never dreamed of meeting such a bird, even in such severe frosts!" said photographer Oleksandr Riznyk in his post.

In Ukraine, this migratory bird is protected by the Bern and Bonn Conventions, according to Wikipedia.

According to ornithologists, with a body weight of 14-19 grams, the black redstart is smaller than a sparrow. Its red tail shakes almost all the time, so it seems that this little bird is cold. Well, at least it is really cold in the cold, because this bird is not used to it.

Oleksandr Riznyk emphasized that Cherkasy region is experiencing severe frosts. "It's a miracle that it didn't freeze, given that we have nights down to -10," he said.

Biologists note that compared to other insectivorous birds, the black redstart leaves the nesting grounds very late and returns early. In Central Europe, the first males appear in the first decade of March, and the mass migration occurs in the second half of October. In the Carpathians, the birds arrive in late March - early April and leave in early October.
