It would seem that the warmer it is, the better the plants grow and develop. But in reality, heat can negatively affect your crops and even destroy them.
Direct sunlight and high temperatures can lead to leaf burns, drying out of the soil, and plant death. OBOZ.UA tells how to save the garden on the hottest days.
What plants need protection from the heat
Not all plants are equally resistant to heat. Some of them, such as cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant and other delicate crops, need protection.
To protect your future harvest, you need to prevent direct sunlight from damaging the plants. You can stretch greenhouse arcs over the beds and make a shelter out of thin fabric or mesh that will diffuse the light.
If you don't have arcs, you can make a canopy out of scrap materials, such as pegs, beach umbrellas, etc.
However, remember that plants need air circulation, so do not make the shelter airtight. Also, if you are growing vegetables in a greenhouse, you should open all windows and doors on hot days.
Watering
Watering plants is necessary, but it is important to do it correctly. First, check the soil moisture at a depth of 3-5 cm. If the soil is wet, it is better to water the garden later.
Do not water the plants during the day. Due to the heat, the moisture will evaporate too quickly and can burn the leaves. It is better to do it late in the evening after 20:00, at night, or in extreme cases, early in the morning.
Water should be poured moderately and evenly so that the moisture seeps well through the soil, softens it and does not stagnate, creating mud.
Mulching will also come in handy. It will help retain moisture in the soil. You can use dry grass, hay, straw, or sawdust to cover the ground.
