Tasty and juicy watermelons can be grown in almost all regions of Ukraine, the main thing is to choose the right variety and take care of fertilizers. Gourds need potash, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium fertilizers.

For the root system to develop properly, the seedlings should be fertilized with nitrogen and phosphorus at the growth stage. How to fertilize watermelons in the summer so that the harvest exceeds all expectations – read the OBOZ.UA article.

Fertilizers for watermelons

Experts emphasize that watermelons grow best on organic fertilizers of animal and plant origin. You can also combine mineral fertilizers and organics.

Let's take a closer look at each of the most popular organic fertilizers.

Wood ash contains phosphorus, potassium, and a full range of trace elements. This fertilizer has a long-term effect – as the ash decomposes in the soil, it supplies gourds with useful substances. The downside is the low nitrogen content. Using only wood ash is very risky, because watermelons may simply not gain enough green mass.

Mullein is a valuable fertilizer that contains nitrogen, potassium, and trace elements. Such fertilization will enrich the soil composition and increase the humus content. However, mullein does not contain phosphorus, as does the third most popular organic fertilizer, chicken manure.

You can fertilize watermelons with compost, a mixture of manure, garden soil, and plant residues. The compost should be dug up with the top layer of soil - this will be a high-quality preliminary preparation of the soil before planting.

Next, experts advise preparing the following solution:

  • Fill a bucket one-third full with mullein and cover with water;
  • leave the fertilizer for at least a week, stirring occasionally;
  • dilute each liter of tincture with 10 liters of water.

The solution can be used to water both seedlings and adult plants until the flowering and fruit formation stage begins.

At the stage of harvest formation, potassium-phosphorus fertilizers, such as ash, become a priority.

Dissolve 200 g of ash in 10 liters of water and leave to stand for 6-7 days. Water the plants at the root.

Or pour 1 kg of wood ash into 10 liters of water, boil for 15 minutes, and dilute with water in a ratio of 1:10.
