Greece: traveling through a country washed by 8 seas

Where to relax in Greece in the spring of 2024

Greece is a country of dreams, beaches, islands, and 8 seas. Yes, that's right, tour operators offer vacations not only on the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Ionian seas but also on the Libyan, Cretan, Tyrrhenian, Thracian, and Myrtle Seas. Haven't heard of them? And no wonder! After all, these are different parts of the first three seas.

Connoisseurs of classical recreation, ancient architecture and ancient myths about centaurs, gods and titans come here. And each of them finds what they are looking for here.

Today we will tell you which Greek cities to visit this spring.

Corfu

An atypical island for the country. It is very different from the famous resorts such as Crete or Rhodes. This piece of land is literally buried in greenery. Olive trees, cypresses, and oranges grow at every turn. It is comfortable to relax here all year round. However, in early March, you still won't be able to sunbathe. During this period, the thermometer ranges from 12 to 16 degrees Celsius.

Coming here, you feel as if you are transported to Old Europe. The local atmosphere is more like provincial Italy than ancient Greece. And no wonder! After all, for some time the territory belonged to the Venetian Republic.

Start your acquaintance with Corfu by visiting the old fortress. Its walls used to protect the Italian protectorate. Go to the Museum of Asian Art. And be sure to visit Mon Repos, the villa where Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth, was born.

Paleokastritsa

Next, head to a small village, which is also located on the island of Corfu. It is an ideal place for a relaxing vacation. Despite its remoteness from popular resorts, there are many well-groomed beaches here. Along them, there are establishments for every taste and budget. There are five-star hotels, ordinary campsites, and luxury villas.

There are not many attractions in Paleokastritsa, so you can get around in a day and spend the rest of the time relaxing or exploring the island. Don't be lazy and go to the ruins of the Angelokastro Castle. The location is known locally as the "Fortress of Angels". The Chapel of the Archangels remains on the territory of the ruined complex.

Be sure to visit the Theotokos Monastery. It was built in the thirteenth century. Here you can see unique icons and Bibles inlaid with precious stones. You can also throw a coin into the well, which, according to the locals, grants wishes.

Don't deny yourself the pleasure of a ride in a local taxi. Transport runs on the water and can take you anywhere on the island in a matter of minutes. By the way, Liapades, an authentic Greek village, is located very close to Paleokastritsa. Be sure to visit it at least for a day.

Mystras

This small abandoned city has a long and interesting history. Once upon a time, its territory belonged to Constantinople, but after the fall of the empire, it was given to William of Villehardouin, a French duke. The man received a large piece of land and built it up, but his greed got the better of him. The count went to war with Nicaea and lost.

The stronghold fell under Byzantine control and became an important administrative center. Emperors were even crowned here. Later, the fortress fell under the pressure of the Ottoman Empire. Many of the locals left, seeking refuge in other polises.

In 1834, King Otto issued a decree to rebuild neighboring Sparta. After its restoration, the population of Mystra left their homes and moved to the new city. Thus began the total decline of the outpost. Today, there are ruins of palaces, elegant churches, and a castle.

Delos

This is a real open-air museum. The ancient Greeks believed that the history of the world began from this island. A lot of time has passed, and this piece of land is still a sacred place for the people.

Among the famous monuments here are the ruins of the temples of Apollo and Artemis. The Market Square, the Terrace of Lions, the Temple of Isis, and the House of Dolphins are also well preserved.

Kos

The name of the island literally translates as "crab". These creatures used to be a symbol of the city. They were even minted on coins.

Kos is located just four kilometers from the southwestern coast of Turkey. By the way, it is the birthplace of Hippocrates. It was here that the father of world medicine was born.

We recommend visiting the Roman House, which was discovered relatively recently. After a powerful earthquake in 1933, archaeologists noticed the remains of ancient architecture. They managed to dig up the whole building. Go to the Neratzia Castle. It was once built to protect the island from the Turks. Do not miss the most important attraction: the ruins of the ancient temple of Asklepios, where the sick were treated, the first books on medicine were written and doctors were trained.
