"Gladiator 3" will definitely happen: the director made a statement after the success of the second movie
"Gladiator 2," the sequel to the legendary 2000 action movie, was recently released. Both parts were directed by Ridley Scott. He has also worked on such cult films as Alien, Blade Runner, All the Money in the World, Napoleon, etc.
"Gladiator 2" is a historical drama, and the sequel takes place 16 years after the first film. The director told us whether he plans to shoot the third part of the movie and what stage the preliminary development is at.
The plot of the sequel centers on the nephew of Emperor Commodus, Lucius. In 2000's Gladiator, he was just a child.
Lucius lived in exile in a distant African country. He had a woman he loved and a new life. Captured by Roman soldiers, Lucius is forced to become a gladiator in the capital of the empire. The man hides his origin and real name from everyone, and suddenly finds himself in a whirlwind of political intrigue.
Lucius must emerge victorious in the Colosseum to restore Rome to its former glory and take revenge on the emperors who conquered his home.
The lead role in "Gladiator 2" was played by Irish actor Paul Mescal (known for his roles in After the Sun and We Are All Strangers). The role of General Marcus Acacius was played by Pedro Pascal (TV series Narcos, The Mandalorian, The Last of Us).
It's no secret that "Gladiator 2" was an expensive production. Scott repeatedly said that it was actually over budget at the time of filming. There was speculation online that the movie would likely not make much money from theatrical earnings alone, and would instead have to rely on distribution and broadcast to make all the money back.
Foreign film critics are also not very happy with the sequel to Gladiator and even accuse the director of "relying too much on nostalgia for the original."
In a recent interview, Scott said that he had already written twelve pages for the third part of the film.
At the last press conference, the director confirmed that Gladiator 3 will definitely happen.
Last week, Scott Mendelsohn of Puck reported that "Gladiator 2," which grossed $55 million in its first days of release, would eventually earn less than $450 million worldwide. Mendelsohn believed that it would be very difficult for the movie to break even. Of course, if we take into account all the profits that the movie will receive from VOD and streaming, it will be able to break even.
