Researchers from two universities in Japan interviewed 500 women to find out the psychological effect of manicures. About three hundred of the respondents regularly visited salons, while the rest did their nails at home or did not do them at all.
This was reported by the Daily Mail. The participants then rated their emotions during the manicure session.
Studies have long shown that going to a manicurist causes a feeling of relaxation and euphoria, thus significantly reducing anxiety. As it turned out, a good mood is a consequence of the brain's reaction to human touch.
However, a new study by Japanese scientists has proven that the benefits of a manicure are due to something else, namely lighthearted chatter in a nail salon.
The women participating in the survey who went for a manicure were asked about the content and quality of their conversations with manicurists and other clients. The results showed that those who had their nails done in a salon experienced significantly more positive emotions compared to those who had their manicure done at home.
The most interesting thing is that the topic of conversation during the session affected the mood of the participants. Positive emotions were triggered by discussions of hobbies and routines, while negative emotions were triggered by conversations about life's difficulties.
Study author Atsushi Kawakubo, an associate professor at Saitama Gakuen University, told PsyPost, "Our study shows that getting your nails done in a salon, combined with light conversation, can have a positive effect on a person's psychological state."
"This practice offers people a good way to improve their mental well-being by emphasizing the importance of self-care and the potential benefits of sharing personal thoughts in a comfortable environment," the scientist explains.
