Germany pledges to build ammunition factory for Ukraine in record time
The German defense concern Rheinmetall will build a new ammunition plant that will produce ammunition only for Ukraine and Germany. It is promised to do this in record time, and the products will be produced quickly.
This was announced by Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger, Bild reports. He noted that the plant will be built in Germany.
At the same time, Papperger emphasized that the total amount of orders or framework agreements from the German government for the military needs of Ukraine and Germany in 2024 is expected to be "at least 15 billion euros." This is significantly higher than last year's 10 billion.
He noted that it is planned to produce products at a high rate. After all, "what would have taken 10 years to produce is now being done in a few months."
"A lot has changed for the better in the military procurement sector. We will build a new ammunition plant in Germany in record time to create strategic security of supply," Papperger said.
Rheinmetall and Ukraine
Earlier, in the fall of 2023, Rheinmetall established a joint venture with the Ukrainian Defense Industry (formerly Ukroboronprom). The joint venture will service and repair equipment that Ukraine has received from its partners.
In addition, Papperger explained that in the future the company will produce tanks and other armored vehicles, as well as train Ukrainians to maintain them. "Ukrainians need to help themselves. If they always have to wait for Europeans or Americans to help them for the next 10 or 20 years.. It's impossible," Papperger said.
He also emphasized that despite former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's threats that "Russia will strike at any Rheinmetall facility in Ukraine," the company can actually be protected from attacks. "There are a lot of plants that produce military products [in Ukraine]. This is just another one, and we can protect it," Papperger said.
