Why do celebrities often wear outrageous outfits? It's simple: to stay in the spotlight and improve their recognition. One public appearance or a movie episode in a provocative dress is enough to make the whole world talk about them. They don't care if it's black PR. As long as this tactic works, they will do it again and again.

We decided to recall the celebrities whose shocking outfits went down in history. Read more in the article by OBOZ.UA.

1. Marilyn Monroe

In 1955, American actress, model and singer Marilyn Monroe starred in the comedy The Seven Year Itch. In one of the episodes, she wore a milky pleated dress with a plunging neckline and an open back, designed by William Travilla. Do you remember when the airflow from the subway shaft lifted the hem of her dress and exposed her legs? This image became the most striking of Marilyn's career.

It took 14 takes to shoot the scene in public. This attracted the attention of curious New Yorkers: they stopped, watched the dress fly up, and exclaimed with joy Monroe's husband was also there. He was upset that his chosen one was flirting in front of cameras and a crowd of strangers. This led to problems in his relationship with his beloved, and later to a divorce.

2. Jayne Mansfield

One of the sex symbols of the twentieth century, American actress Jayne Mansfield attended a 20th Century-Fox party in 1957, organized in honor of Italian film star Sophia Loren. At the time, she wore a satin pink dress with a bare back and an ultra-deep neckline. Provocative, isn't it? Why did the star do it?

Jayne and Sophie were competing with each other in the movie arena, and that night the former wanted to be the center of attention. The next day, the shot of the heroine of the occasion looking at Mansfield's lush breasts went viral and, of course, became the subject of ironic comments.

3. Princess Diana

On June 29, 1994, the ITV channel aired the documentary Charles: The Private Man, The Public Role. In it, the then-heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, admitted that he had been cheating on his wife, Diana, Princess of Wales. On the same day, Lady Dee appeared at a charity dinner organized by Vanity Fair magazine at the Serpentine Gallery in London. And humanity still remembers this appearance! The princess wore a black mini-dress (known as the "revenge dress") with bare shoulders and a bold neckline, designed by Christina Stambolian. Quite daring for a member of the royal family.

4. Kate Middleton

In her student days, Kate Middleton (now the wife of Prince William; Princess of Wales) could afford to wear miniskirts and short dresses, as well as bright makeup. One of her looks from those days went down in history. It was a translucent black and gold mini-dress trimmed with turquoise ribbon that Catherine wore to a charity show at St. Andrew's University in 2002. According to CR, it was this fashion show that symbolized the beginning of her relationship with William. However, there are also unpleasant consequences: when Middleton became a princess, she was repeatedly criticized for this bold act.

5. Rita Ora

English singer Rita Ora decided to outshine the winners of the evening at the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. She wore a black maxi dress by Donna Karan that exposed her back and partially her buttocks and legs. Usually, stars wear flesh-colored underwear with such immodest outfits, but Rita decided to do without.
