For any weather: the most versatile SUVs are named
Buying a car is an important investment. Drivers strive to choose reliable and high-quality models to feel confident on the road despite changing weather conditions.
Such characteristics as sufficient ground clearance, all-wheel drive, and reliable safety systems are, of course, out of the question. Experts say you can get everything you need at an affordable price.
Volvo XC40
Starting price: $41,795
The 2024 Volvo XC40 is designed for winter driving. The car has standard all-wheel drive. Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assist, as well as other safety features, are standard.
With a ground clearance of 8.3 inches, the XC40 is one of the few subcompact SUVs that can easily overcome snowy roads. Heated seats and rain-sensing windshield wipers come standard, but you can upgrade to add a heated steering wheel and rear seats for added comfort. The 2-liter turbocharged engine produces 246 horsepower and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The car also has a unique towing capacity.
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
Starting price: $33,120
The 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is known for its impressive fuel economy and reliable handling in all conditions. It is equipped with a 2.5-liter engine paired with three electric motors, producing 219 horsepower. With 8.1 inches of ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive, this compact SUV performs well in snow and rain. In addition, the dual-zone automatic climate control keeps the cabin comfortable.
Unlike the Volvo XC40, heated seats and rain-sensing windshield wipers are not standard. Instead, to get these features, you'll have to choose the more expensive Woodland Edition with the optional Weather Package.
Hyundai Tucson
Starting price: $28,875
The Hyundai Tucson is equipped with safety features that make it ideal for winter driving. Automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, and driver attention monitoring can be useful in bad weather.
The Tucson is powered by a 2.5-liter engine that produces 187 horsepower. For added safety and comfort, experts recommend choosing the SEL Convenience option to add blind spot monitoring and heated front seats.
Honda CR-V
Starting price: $30,850
Thanks to its 8-inch ground clearance, the CR-V handles snowy and wet roads well. Standard safety features include radar cruise control, automatic high beams, and emergency braking.
If you choose the Sport Touring Hybrid model, you'll get extra power and improved fuel efficiency.
Subaru Forester
Starting price: $28,440
The base model of the Subaru Forester doesn't have all the advantages of the other compact SUVs on this list, but it comes standard with the most important feature for weather conditions: all-wheel drive. In addition, the car has the highest ground clearance of 8.7 inches, which provides enough space to navigate in snowy conditions. And if you choose the more expensive Wilderness trim, you get a ground clearance of 9.2 inches. Heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a heated steering wheel are available on higher trims if you need extra comfort.
In addition, the Forester is equipped with the Subaru EyeSight driver assistance package, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.
