Five cars with the lowest safety rating are named
Euro NCAP, the European organization for car safety, conducted a series of crash tests in 2024 and identified the cars with the lowest safety ratings. It is important to note that none of the tested cars received a rating below three stars, which indicates an overall improvement in safety standards.
The organization does not publish an official ranking of the "worst" cars, but an analysis of the results of 44 tested models allowed us to identify five cars with the lowest scores. It is worth emphasizing that getting three stars in 2024, given the brutality of the tests, is a pretty good result. One of the cars may even boast four stars after installing an additional safety package, according to CAR Magazine.
Five cars with the lowest safety rating (in reverse order):
Ford Tourneo Custom
This large MPV based on a van performed quite well regarding child protection. Euro NCAP notes the strong and stable body structure. With the optional Driver Assistance Pack with Navigation, the vehicle can earn four stars.
Ford Tourneo Courier
The smaller MPV from Ford performed worse than its bigger brother, especially in terms of protection of adult passengers (poor head protection in the rear) and children. Euro NCAP also noted that this car can suffer a lot during a frontal collision.
Jeep Avenger
This compact SUV from a well-known brand received low rating due to the lack of systems to prevent collisions between passengers and on secondary roads. There are also concerns about child protection and pedestrian impact. Moreover, the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system was called insufficient.
Dacia Duster
Given Dacia's policy of minimizing spending on safety technology, the three-star rating comes as no surprise. The car performed relatively poorly in terms of adult occupant protection, although it performed better when protecting children.
Suzuki Swift
This compact car received the lowest overall rating among those tested in 2024. Euro NCAP noted insufficient leg protection for adult passengers and a number of child protection issues. The eCall system also does not meet the organization's standards.
It is important to note that comparing test results from different years is difficult due to the constant improvement of Euro NCAP's methods. For example, the Renault Zoe, which received five stars in 2013, got zero in 2021 due to changes in standards and in the design of the car itself. In general, the results of crash tests in 2024 indicate a steady increase in the safety of new cars.
