FIFA responds to Ukraine's protest over what happened during the 2026 World Cup draw
The International Football Federation (FIFA) has apologized for the incorrect display of a map of Ukraine that did not include the Crimean peninsula. This incident occurred during the broadcast of the draw for the European qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After that, the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) sent a note of protest to FIFA, pointing out the inadmissibility of such mistakes and demanding clarification.
In its response, FIFA stated that the map was prepared by a third-party contractor. After the error was discovered, the organization took prompt action by removing the image from circulation and launching an internal review. These steps, according to FIFA, are aimed at preventing similar cases in the future.
The organization also expressed regret that the incident could have caused moral damage, emphasizing respect for the UAF's position and the sensitivity of the issue. FIFA representatives noted that the incident was not intentional and thanked the UAF for its understanding and willingness to engage in a constructive dialogue.
The response was signed by Elkhan Mamedov, FIFA's Head of Relations with National Associations. The organization stated its openness to further discussion of the issue and is ready to provide additional clarification if necessary.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, on December 13, the draw for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the European zone took place in Zurich. The Ukrainian national team was placed in Group D, where its rivals will be France or Croatia (the winner of the Nations League quarterfinals), as well as Iceland and Azerbaijan.
Earlier, FIFA decided to host the 2030 World Cup, finally excluding the Ukrainian bid.
