eatthis.com spoke to an expert to find out four steps that can help reduce anxiety while traveling. Dr. Anisha Patel-Dunn notes that travel anxiety can fit the general definition of anxiety, as it is "a chronic worry that can significantly affect your daily life."

She explains that when traveling, people encounter various triggers that cause anxiety. This can manifest itself in changes in sleep, appetite, mood, heart palpitations, and a sense of loss of control.

If you experience persistent anxiety while traveling that prevents you from enjoying your travels, Dr. Patel-Dunn recommends seeing a mental health professional.

Prepare well

Preparing for your trip can reduce the feelings of uncertainty that often contribute to anxiety. "Do everything you can to prepare for your trip, as this will help reduce anxiety symptoms," advises Dr. Patel-Dunn.

For example, if you're flying, try to get to the airport early to avoid being rushed. And if you're staying at a new hotel, contact them in advance to find out the details.

Distractions

Having your favorite activities or games on hand can be very helpful. "This will help you distract yourself when you feel anxious while traveling," emphasizes Dr. Patel-Dunn. For example, read a book or play a game on your phone while you're on the road.

Visualization

Imagine yourself in the place you are traveling to. "Whether it's a white sand beach or mountain tops, imagining pleasant moments can calm your nervous system," the expert notes. It's important to get rid of stress and enjoy the moment.

Focus on the positive

Instead of focusing on the worst-case scenarios, focus on what can bring you comfort. For example, if you're worried about getting lost, prepare alternate routes or keep a spare phone charger handy. Chat with friends who have already visited the place or join an online travel group for more information.

By following these tips, you can reduce your anxiety level and enjoy every moment of your travels.
