Fairy-tale village in Portugal named one of the most beautiful in the world
Portugal is famous for its beautiful landscapes that combine mountainous terrain with the Atlantic coast. The country is called one of the most successful vacation destinations in 2025.
However, travel experts advise choosing lesser-known destinations for a tourist trip to Portugal. Of course, Lisbon offers a lot of entertainment and interesting cultural events, but in the heart of the country you can find a hidden gem that will give you no less impressions. According to the Express, we are talking about the village of Castelo Nova, which is part of the municipality of Fundan.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has named this charming place as one of the best tourist villages in the world. Founded 800 years ago, Castelo Novo showcases Portugal's rich history and heritage.
The village was recognized for its commitment to sustainability practices, local community empowerment, and exceptional visitor safety. Here you can enjoy beautiful nature and rich culture. Castelo Nova is also praised for its zero carbon footprint.
Tourists flock here to see the village's archaeological site, the Roman baths of Quinta do Ervedal. The UNWTO has this to say about the site: "The earliest mention of Castelo Nova, then called Alpreada, dates back to around 1202 AD. To protect his kingdom from any potential threats, King Diniz rebuilt the village castle, adopting typical Gothic features, and commissioned several buildings in the medieval style."
Five electric vehicles transport tourists from the local train station. Visitors to the village can enjoy the amazing views of the Garduna Mountains, which rise in the heart of the Beira Baixa region.
Tourists who want to explore the rich history of the village can learn how grapes were harvested and pressed here in the past and admire the majestic mansions. Those looking for an active adventure can follow the so-called Miller's Route to see the windmills, an echo of the village's past.
The trip from Lisbon will take visitors about three and a half hours by train or, if you want to go faster, two and a half hours by car. Castelo Novo is located near Coimbra, a wonderful coastal city known for its medieval center. This picturesque village can be visited as part of a day trip, or you can stay here longer.
