Explosives planted near the driveway: Russian lieutenant general and his assistant killed in Moscow. Photo and video
The explosion in the Russian capital on the morning of December 17 killed lieutenant general Igor Kirillov, who was previously served with a notice of suspicion for war crimes in Ukraine, and his assistant Ilya Polikarpov. The cause was allegedly an improvised explosive device attached to an electric scooter standing at a driveway.
This was reported by Russian Telegram channels, publishing a number of photos and videos from the scene on Ryazansky Avenue. Later, the information was officially confirmed by the Russian investigation officers, announcing assassination attempt. According to OBOZ.UA's sources, it was SSU agents that were behind the elimination of the Russian war criminal, who was a legitimate target.
"It was an assassination attempt... The explosion occurred after the detonation of an explosive device. According to preliminary data, the IED was planted at a driveway," the propagandists wrote.
Prior to that, Russian public media, citing eyewitnesses, reported a powerful explosion in a house on Ryazansky Avenue near the Plushki Vatrushki cafe. According to them, the explosion occurred when two men were leaving the building, leaving the doors blown off and the windows smashed.
"First we heard the sound of detonation, and then we saw the car and the bodies of the men. There were fragments of windows smashed by the shock wave nearby. According to one of the versions, it could have been an assassination attempt," the reports said.
The Russian Telegram channel Mash was the first to report that the explosion could have killed a lieutenant general of Russian Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defence Troops and his assistant, who is also his driver. The latter had come to pick up his boss at work. Their company car was also damaged.
"The IED was probably attached to an electric scooter that was standing near the entrance door. Preliminary, it is known that the perpetrators had planted about 200 grams of TNT. The IED was detonated remotely. Two cars near the detonation site were also damaged," the propagandists claim.
Later, they published a photo of the lieutenant general killed in the explosion. The Main Investigation Department of the Moscow Investigative Committee confirmed that the victims were the head of Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defence Troops, Igor Kirillov, and his assistant, Ilya Polikarpov. They opened a criminal case "regarding the murder of two servicemen, a terrorist attack, and illegal trafficking in weapons and ammunition."
"The explosion occurred around 06:00, when a company car arrived to pick up Kirillov. The Moscow Investigative Committee confirmed that the IED was attached to the handle of an electric scooter that was standing at the entrance door. 200 grams of TNT were detonated remotely. The men died on the spot," Russian Telegram channels stated.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the incident, claiming that the official had been "exposing the dangerous activities of American biological laboratories in Ukraine for many years," fearlessly fighting "for the Motherland and the truth."
What is known about the eliminated Russian lieutenant general
Russian Wikipedia has already updated the data on the 54-year-old military leader, setting December 17, 2024 as the date of his death. It says that Igor Kirillov, while occupying his position, "performed many complex state tasks" both in Russia and abroad, in particular in Syria.
He was involved in the creation and adoption of the TOS-2 Tosochka heavy flamethrower system for the Russian army. The Russian media also boasted that with Kirillov's assistance, the country had developed a set of reagents to detect the COVID-19 virus.
In addition, it is said that the military commander was a frequent guest at Russian Ministry of Defense briefings, where he shared propaganda narratives, saying that "Ukrainians are developing weapons to be transmitted through birds to kill Russians."
It is noteworthy that the day before the incident in Moscow, the Security Service of Ukraine announced a suspicion to the late official.
It was established that he ordered the occupiers to use banned chemical weapons against the Ukrainian Defense Forces, in particular in the East and South of Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, the enemy used more than 4,800 chemical munitions.
Based on the evidence collected, SSU investigators notified Kirillov of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crime committed by prior conspiracy of a group of persons) in absentia.
As reported, on the night of September 27, Russian Colonel Alexei Kolomeitsev was killed in the Moscow region. The war criminal was the head of the 924th Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Center of the Russian Defense Ministry.
