Exploring the most popular European ski resorts
Is there anything better than the feeling of going down a snowy slope? The Alps, Pyrenees, and other mountain ranges attract millions of winter sports enthusiasts every year. But which location to choose from such a variety? Today, we are going to tell you about the features and uniqueness of each of them.
Sölden, Austria
Sölden is located in the picturesque Ötztal Valley, near the border with Italy. The resort is surrounded by dozens of three-thousand meter peaks, the highest being Wildspitze (3,774). The location has become one of the largest European ski centers.
The tourist season starts in mid-September and lasts until early May.
Blue, red, and black slopes have been built here, with a total length of about 140 kilometers. More than 30 ski lifts are offered to visitors.
After an active day, there is also plenty to do. Sölden has nightclubs, bars, souvenir shops, restaurants and a cinema. Travelers can also enjoy Nachtskilauf - night skiing.
By the way, another popular destination, Obergurgl, is located nearby, with much fewer people.
Špindlerův Mlýn, Czech Republic
It is located in the Krkonoše mountain range on the territory of the National Park.
Every year, it hosts the European Freestyle Skiing Cup and snowboarding competitions.
The tourist season in the region begins in December and lasts until the end of April.
Even in adverse weather conditions, the slopes are maintained by modern artificial snowmaking systems. The total length of all the slopes is about 28 kilometers and includes routes of different difficulty levels: from easy to extreme. There are also 6 chair lifts and 11 rope tows.
For those who like to ski at night, there are special illuminated slopes that are open until 21:00. Travelers can visit clubs, bars, fitness centers, and cinemas.
Jasná, Slovakia
It is located in the Low Tatras in the Demänovská Dolina. The ski season begins in December and lasts until early April.
The resort is divided into 5 zones: Záhradky, Jasná, Otupné, Srdiečko and Kosodrevina. They are characterized by gentle slopes for beginners and steep slopes for professionals. There are also areas for freeride and sledding.
There are about 18 trails with a total length of 50 kilometers.
There are ski schools and equipment rental shops.
In the local hotels, travelers can warm up in SPA centers with saunas and jacuzzis.
Cervino, Italy
Located at the foot of the Matterhorn in the Aosta Valley.
The highest peak for skiing is the Plateau Rosa glacier, 3,489 meters above sea level. An extensive network of pistes of varying difficulty has been created here.
Snow cover remains even in the hottest summer months. Although the air temperature is much lower in winter, it is still moderate for mountainous regions.
The resort has a joint lift system with Zermatt in Switzerland. This allows tourists to ski in both countries.
In addition to fun on the slopes, travelers can visit numerous shops, restaurants, bars, and sports schools. And in the souvenir shops they will find a wide range of unique handicrafts, such as copper utensils and wooden toys.
Chamonix, France
It is located in the valley of the same name at the foot of Mount Mont Blanc. In 1924, the resort became the venue for the first Winter Olympics.
There are 5 ski areas: Vallorcine, Le Tour, Argentiere, Chamonix, Les Houches and St Gervais.
Chamonix boasts one of the largest and most prestigious snow parks in the world. More than 170 kilometers of slopes have been arranged for tourists. Among them, 20 routes are extreme, 34 are for experienced skiers and 13 are for beginners.
Two large schools employ about 300 instructors. Therefore, everyone can conquer winter sports.
A kindergarten was built for those traveling with kids.
