Experts recommend: what used car to choose in 2024

Choosing an aftermarket car can be a lottery. There is always a risk of stumbling upon a model that will bring more hassle and expense than benefit and pleasure. Speaking about the reliability and durability of cars, the ratings are usually dominated by Japanese brands such as Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura, Subaru, Mazda, etc.

While Japanese brands focus on consistency and reliability, many German companies pay attention to the details of precision engineering, driving performance and luxury finishes. Experts have released a ranking of trustworthy quality used cars.

Audi A3

The 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder compact's 201-horsepower engine delivers a vivid driving experience reminiscent of the brand's larger sport sedans. The 2025 is available for around $37,000, but you can also look for a model from 2016. Around that time, A3s were available in soft-top sedans and convertibles and were prized for their small size and low cost.

BMW 5 Series

Kelley Blue Book (KBB) estimates the price range of a used 2016 BMW 5 Series to be between $12,318 and $20,187, depending on equipment. The 2016 midsize business sedan received a score of 88 from the JD Power Quality & Reliability Score. Experts praised its handling and durability.

Volkswagen Passat

Introduced in 1973, the "world's most successful midsize model" was discontinued in 2022 amid changing consumer trends and VW's move toward crossovers and electric vehicles. With its family-friendly design and choice of powertrains, this European sedan perfectly meets the needs of most drivers.

BMW 325is

The second-generation BMW 3-Series, the E30, is considered one of the most extraordinary car models ever produced by the German auto giant. HotCars highlighted the 1990 retro model in particular for its exceptional reliability and durability. Used E30 prices continue to rise, but 325is have relatively low maintenance costs and rarely break down.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The A4 went ahead with sedan and station wagon body models that contained tiny 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines with 211 horsepower. However, this reliable vehicle has performed very well. HotCars recommends staying away from early 2000s models.

BMW 1 Series

TopSpeed rated the second-generation BMW 1 Series (produced between 2011 and 2019) as the most reliable German car of the last decade, noting that it "received a lot of praise from owners and even mechanics for its reliability, luxury, and price." The BMW 1 Series took the top spot among 37 cars in the What Car? Reliability Survey and received a perfect 100% score.
