Electricity may be cut off in Ukraine during low temperatures: FT on preparations for winter

In Ukraine, standardized power outages lasting 1 to 2 hours are likely to be introduced if winter temperatures drop below -10°C. But longer blackouts are also likely if there is massive shelling by the terrorist country of Russia.

This opinion is voiced by Ukrainian experts, according to the Financial Times. The country is currently intensively preparing for possible massive strikes on the energy sector.

On the eve of winter, Russia began to attack Ukraine's energy infrastructure again. In the summer, the occupiers targeted seaports and grain export infrastructure, but in recent weeks, the energy sector has come under attack again.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal told the FT that Ukraine is not only strengthening its air defense but is also preparing a so-called passive defense on the ground. According to him, the country is better prepared for Russian attacks this year.

"A wall of concrete blocks has been built at a critical power grid substation in northern Ukraine to protect transformers. Gabions, or cylindrical cages filled with stones or sand, can be seen around another neighboring substation, the location of which cannot be disclosed due to wartime security rules," the statement said.

The Prime Minister added that the protection of Ukrainian energy facilities is "not 100% effective". However, according to him, such blocks and cages protect in 80-90% of cases, especially from drones and their fragments.

As OBOZ.UA previously wrote, Ukrainians were urged not to believe the forecasts of blackouts in November, which refer to the use of schedules even in the absence of Russian attacks on the energy sector. The Ministry of Energy assures that the only condition for the introduction of the schedules is the shelling of infrastructure.
